CHANCE OF WINNING ALL STAR GAME TICKETS = PRICELESS

Today, I completed my mission and found the last of the Mickey Mouse statues that have been placed around Southern California for the 2010 All Star Game, which is coming to Anaheim in July.

I have explored Southern California and have seen so many great areas that I may have never seen before. As you know, my husband has been out of town on business from Friday, June 4th and he will be back tomorrow. I  have never really ventured to far on my own. I have not been in California very long and I don’t even take a highway to go to work. This experience was amazing. I have learned so much about the area and I actually know geographically where surrounding cities are located.

I accomplished my goal today and words cannot describe how amazing I feel right now! All on my own, I did it.

I grew up watching baseball and I played softball for many years. I could sit and watch baseball all day, every day. There is just something about this sport that I love everything about.

When I saw on the City of Anaheim Facebook page that there was going to be a contest for a chance at All Star Game tickets, I knew I was in. This Saturday is me and Trent’s first wedding anniversary and he will finally be home tomorrow. I cannot think of a better gift to give him than tickets to the All Star Game. I’ve heard so many times, people say, It’s the thought that counts…and over the last 6 days, I’ve had a lot of time to think!

Today, I found my last four Mickey Mouse Statues, Tampa Bay, Toronto, San Francisco, and Baltimore. The feeling of accomplishment and joy was overwhelming. I’m sure the cars next to me at traffic lights thought I was crazy because I was singing Dancing Queen from my Mama Mia soundtrack at the top of my lungs the whole way home!

I will always be inspired by Walt Disney who said,

“If you can dream it, you can do it!”

“I got a feeling, that tonight’s
gonna be a good night!”

I left work today a little before 5 p.m. and hit the road to go back to the land of the Stars! Traffic was a lot worse then yesterday!! In the past three days, I have spent about 19 hours on the road in the hunt for Mickey’s and although sitting in traffic is definitely not fun, I am actually a lot more comfortable on the road as a result of my adventures!

First stop tonight was Union Station in Los Angeles. I was a little nervous walking up there by myself, but I put on my sunglasses and my I am a tough girl face, and it worked like a charm. I walked by one man sitting on a bench in orange pants and I was not sure if he was just out jail, but I was not going to stop and ask. It cost me $2 to park for 4 minutes, but worth every penny because I got my picture of the Pittsburgh Pirates Mickey Statue!

After leaving Union Station, I was ready to reach for the stars and headed to Hollywood! I’m not sure if people in this area are just angry because they sure do honk and yell a lot. I also don’t understand why people hit the crosswalk button so many times. I’m pretty sure that if you hit it once or 52 times, the light will not change any faster.

I found a photo op with the Cincinnati Reds Mickey at the Holiday Inn Express before heading to the infamous Hollywood Boulevard. After another $2 to park, I found three Mickey Statues in close proximity – Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, and Philadelphia Phillies. I only had one more stop for the night, Industry Rag,where I found the Cleveland Indians Mickey Statue!

This adventure has been one of a kind. I have learned and seen a lot about the area. I am so fired up for the MLB All Star festivities!! My husband and I will celebrate our ONE YEAR Wedding anniversary on Saturday, June 12, and I cannot think of a better gift for both of us to share than the MLB All Star Game tickets! (I should definitely get an A for effort!!)

5 Hours
150 Miles
No Dinner
4 Mickeys

Tonight turned out to be one heck of an adventure! So, for those of you who have followed my journey this far, thank you, let me share some more details! My husband has been out of town on business since last Friday and will return this Friday night, so this entire Mickey Scavenger Hunt has been done on my own. I think so far, I have driven about 350 miles and put about 15 hours into it. I know I could’ve done a lot less hours, but, I don’t know the area that well and did a lot of driving all over!

I’d like to start off by thanking my boss, Brad – who is awesome! He let me leave work an hour early today to continue my dedicated mission! Let me say, my original plan tonight was simple. Head to Rancho Cucamonga, take one picture at Victoria Gardens and head home. BUT, I found out that the Mickey Statue had not yet arrived in Rancho Cucamonga so it was on to Plan B!

Around 4 p.m., I headed to Los Angeles. I’ve already told you that I am a country girl from Maine and not a fan of highways, definitely not cities. Since I did not have my right arm at home, I had to take on this adventure alone. It started off easy enough. I headed to Long Beach Towne Center where I discovered the Houston Astros Mickey Statue. Awesome, one down! If only, the rest of the night was THAT easy… well, I would NOT have spent 4.5 hours finding 3 more Mickeys or had a story to tell!

Next stop was ESPN Zone. Driving in traffic was insane. I programed my GPS to 1111 Figueroa Street, Los Angeles. When Lola (yes, I named my GPS) said, “You have arrived,” my heart about sank. I was no where near an ESPN Zone. That’s when I realized the word SOUTH. The actual address was 1111 SOUTH Figueroa Street, Los Angeles.  Well, SOUTH was a VERY important word to Lola, because it turns out, I am now 20 miles away from the actual ESPN Zone.

When I finally got there, I was like a little fish in a big ocean. I ended up on the wrong level and asked who I thought to be a Janitor for directions. It turns out he was just a bum, but still helpful and pointed out ESPN Zone. New York Yankees Mickey – got’cha! I am ready to leave and then realize I need to bring my parking ticket to a little machine before I can leave the garage. Of course my parking ticket is in my car, so I get my ticket from the car, go to the little machine, and off I go, 2nd Mickey of the night – check!

Okay, so this is where I start to panic. My iPhone is in the red zone which means it is about to die. The GPS in my car is tempermental and takes me where I want to go when it feels like it. I’m alone and there is no way I am going to drive around without a phone. I usually have my phone charger in my car, but I gave it to my husband to take on his trip to charge his iPod. I drove around for what seemed like forever trying to find an AT&T store so I could purchase a new car charger. I finally ended up at La Brea Shopping Avenue which was really cool! After $25 and an hour lost, I had my cell phone back! I also saw a real-life prostitute on the street corner at one of the traffic lights I was stopped at… A whole lot of firsts tonight!

Next stop for me was The Music Center. I ended up getting on a highway that was completely jam packed from an accident. I ended up calling my husband, who was in NY, and he guided me through back roads from a sig alert site on his computer. So, here I am a “non-city” girl driving down back streets to avoid traffic. You must ask yourself… Who is this girl… really?

I finally end up at the Music Center where I had to talk the parking attendant into letting me park for 5 minutes so I can just get a picture of the statue. He obviously has no idea what I am talking about and does not speak much English, but finally, he agrees. I run up to the LA Dodgers statue and I see two girls sitting at a table. I walk up to them and ask politely if one of them would mind taking my picture and one girl agrees! I was lucky because The Music Center was closed, so I am glad I found someone there to take the picture.

I had one more stop on my agenda and that was in Santa Monica. I drove another 15-20 minutes down some highway… and eventually found the Holiday Inn. I pulled up to the valet, who was MIA, parked my car and ran inside. There was NO one in sight in the hotel. I asked the front desk clerk if he would mind taking my picture with the Mickey. He told me he was not allowed to leave the desk but he would call the Valet guy. The Valet guy took my picture with the Chicago White Sox Mickey and FINALLY, I was ready to go home!

After about a 45 minute drive back to the OC, I arrived home, safe and sound, at 9:00 p.m. Dinner tonight – Chef boyardee!

Going to the All Star Game is definitely on my bucket list… if I do not make it, I may die trying!  What a long strange trip it has been so far… 21 down, 15 to go… and HERE is the UPDATED list!

  1. All-Star Game Mickey- Anaheim City Hall
  2. All-Star Game Mickey- Anaheim Convention Center

In case you don’t know, I LOVE Baseball! More importantly… I LOVE the Anaheim Angels! Yes, I still call them the ANAHEIM Angels, not the “City of Angels Angels of Anaheim.” That’s just weird.

I am VERY excited for MLB ALL STAR WEEK! The 2010 MLB All Star Game and Festivities will be held in Anaheim this year, July 9-13. To celebrate, Major League Baseball and Disney Consumer Products will be spreading thirty-six MLB All Star Mickey Mouse Statues throughout Southern California. All of the statues are expected to be in place by June 11th! Of the 36 statues, there is one for each of the 30 MLB Baseball Teams, 4 All-Star Designs, 1 American League, and 1 National League Mickey. Each one stands 7.5 feet tall and weighs close to 1,000 pounds! You can also purchase your own 7.5 inch collector Mickey Statue…yes, I bought one today!

On June 11th, MLB and Disney Consumer Products will launch a Find Mickey Scavenger Hunt, which will reward people for visiting the different statue locations and being the FIRST to find and tweet a photo. The first person to take a photo in front of all 36 statues AND tweets a link to their photo gallery will win the grand prize… TWO tickets to the MLB All-Star Game on July 13th!! That CHANCE was ALL the motivation I needed!!

This morning at 9AM, I set off to find the OC Mickeys that were out there. Stop #1 – Village at Orange. No Mickey to be found. That’s when I realized that not all of the Mickey’s were out yet! No worries, I knew there were some in the Anaheim Resort District, so off I went!

I was on this adventure solo, so every statue I came across, I had to ask someone to take my picture. The only problem I ran into was the All Star Game Mickey at the Anaheim City Hall. Since it is Saturday, there was not a soul in sight. But, not to worry, I managed to take my own picture.

Mid-way through my hunt, I hit Angels Stadium. This could be my second home. The Angels were out of town today and I knew the Mickey Statue was behind a locked gate but I was determined. I walked into the Official Store and talked with the retail associate, who so kindly walked me into the stadium to take my picture. Awesome! I ended up purchasing an All-Star Game 2010 tank top, which would be better in my pictures going forward, and my All Star Game Mickey Statue.

After 1 Amp Energy Drink, 7.5 hours, 100 miles, and half a tank of gas, I took a picture of 15 statues. I also went to four places where the statues were not up yet – total bummer! All in all, it was a very successful day!!

Will I be the GRAND PRIZE WINNER and win the 2 All Star Game tickets – I hope so! But, for the LOVE of baseball, I would probably take a picture of all of them anyway!

Most of the Mickey Statues that I have left to find are in LA County. Being a Maine girl, this kind of scares me a little. I will most likely have to team up with a friend to find the rest, but for now I’m on a mission! Go Angels!

Below are the All Star Mickey Statues that I photographed today:

  1. All-Star Game Mickey- Anaheim City Hall
  2. All-Star Game Mickey- Anaheim Convention Center
  3. American League Mickey – Hilton Anaheim
  4. National League Mickey – Anaheim Marriott
  5. Minnesota Twins Mickey- Anaheim GardenWalk
  6. Anaheim Angels Mickey- Angel Stadium
  7. Atlanta Braves Mickey- Disney Esplanade
  8. Florida Marlins Mickey- Downtown Disney – ESPN Zone
  9. Oakland Athletics Mickey – Muzeo
  10. San Diego Padres Mickey – South Coast Plaza
  11. Detroit Tigers Mickey – Crown Plaza Anaheim
  12. New York Mets Mickey – Irvine Spectrum Center
  13. Colorado Rockies Mickey – The Market Place
  14. Boston Red Sox Mickey – Discovery Science Center
  15. Arizona Diamondbacks Mickey – The District at Tustin Legacy
